I have been whiting to get an ornate for a while now and I have finally found one. I was wondering if an ornate would be okay with some electric yellow cichlids until I can setup a larger tank for him. Would that work?

Depends on the size of the ornate in relation to the size of the cichlids too small he may get bullied to big and he may eat them is there places in the tank he could hide?
I have no experience with cichlids. So pretty much what you said, as long as they don't bother the ornate or they don't fit in the ornate's mouth. They should be ok.

Basically the same for all bichirs, they prefer a wider foot print to height so make sure it's a wide tank front to back, they do enjoy moving around in leaf litter driftwood amd plants, atleast that has been my experience with them
