Hello,
I have 2 pairs of oscarfish. they are around 18-19 months old. i have heard the if the caudal fin overlaps the tail fin, then its a male and if it doesnt then its a female. I hqave also read that oscars are impossible to sex unless they start to breed. could anyone shed more light on this?
regards
Aalok.

Just looking at oscars, whether using fins, or anything else it is nearly impossible to get a gender ID.
Venting is the only surefire way, but.......if you're not experienced in venting, even it can be difficult.

i will try to find that video. the channel is fish story, a public DIY Public Aquarium & Fish Rescue. Also one correction in my original post. the dorsal fin overlaps the caudal fin. I meant to say.

Oscars are monomorphic. No possible way to tell males from female by visual appearance. Regardless of what some internet posts may claim. These need to be vented and typically need to be pretty close to sexual maturity to do so accurately.
Greatly appreciated. I was hoping there was a shortcut. But no shortcuts in life😀
