1st I started my aquarium with activated carbon with an oscar@ 4" he developed severe hole in hole in the head

after i noticed the HITH i took the acticated carbon out

then oscar went 5 months with out HITH and the signs diminished within days and then diapered with in 2 months

after removing the carbon, i then noticed my water getting a little cloudy so i added carbon to make the water crystal clear.....

it did what is was supposed to do making the water crystal clear as hell!!!!

but then 4 dayes later my Oscar was showing signs of HITH so i thought it was nothing

10 days later i noticed the problem getting worse so i got rid of the carbon an the HITH has receded

SO THE SOLUTION TO ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH HITH HAS BEN RESOLVED

DON'T PUT ACTIVATED CARBON IN YOUR AQUARIUMS WITH OSCARS!!!!

dont agree fully ,had an oscar develop hith without carbon in the tank, and all my tanks run carbon now all all my oscars are extremly healthy, the reason some people think it is the carbon that causes it is because the carbon masks the real problem,so they think with clear water there is no problem, the problem is always water quality with or with out carbon, only ever had one oscar get hith(with out carbon in the filters)uped my water changes and maintence and it healed in a few months never had a problem again with it and the oscar is now in a tank running carbon all the time, and he is now over a year old never had it come back.(WATER QUALITY)just my opinion to each his own.

I agree that the problem is water quality in almost every case. The carbon seems to be a breeding ground for the heximita and for some, removal of carbon along with aggressive water changes cures the problem. It seems to have to do with the way the carbon interacts with your particular water chemistry. To say that carbon is the culprit is not proven without a careful examination of the VOC's, DOC's and the carbon itself.

For some, use of carbon is essential to maintaining a good water column. For others, (like me), it's a waste of time and money to use it.

agreed with buddha

because the water is clear people sometimes neglect to do water chges
and thus making water quality poor
its not the carbon its the water

the other culprit to HITH is a nutritional dificiency... I thought carbon got rid of odors didn't think it had that much to do with clear water... why not use UV sterilizer that will keep the water clear and get rid of heximita...

UV sterilizer has the potential to kill beneficial bacteria also. It's a good idea only I don't know how long on/off cycle would be best.

It only kills particles that are floating , the beneficial bacteria builds up in the filter and under the gravel also will stick to rocks etc., so I'm not too worried about it killing off the beneficial bacteria, it's better to have peace of mind IMO... :)

carbon causing hith ive never had carbon in my experience casue hith. but to each is own. hope ur oscar is okay
