Oscars and HOB Filters

Hey guys
I'm about to get a 75g tank and most likely be getting 1 oscar and a few silver dollars. I was wondering if i could have 1-2 large HOB filters and 2 XL sponge filters or wether I should go with a canister or something

I personally would go with a sump and HOB filter but most will suggest a sump.

The easiest way would be 2 aquaclears both rated for your tank.

Silver dollars need groups of like 6 and they get big. On top of that they're super skittish. Its a bad fit for your tank with a fast growing Oscar.

Ok, what other tank mates would you suggest for oscars. I would prefer a larger growing schooling fish

I personally would go with a sump and HOB filter but most will suggest a sump.

You could do HOB filters, just make sure you keep an eye on the water quality as Oscars are messy fish. I would make sure you over filter. I did it with an Oscar for about 10 years with a few silver dollars as well and some other fish. He (Toby the Oscar) did well. As the above said, I would go with AC, but I am partial to them as I have had several in my lifetime all of which have worked very well.

Thanks for the advice, I'm now planning on getting 2 HOBS and a large sponge and I may eventually upgrade to a sump or xl canister. How many silver dollars do you recommend keeping together?
I'll make sure to send photos once everything is setup

Silver dollars do best in a group of 8 or larger. They act entirely different than being kept in a group of 4-5, or even less. However, like Pyru, I feel that a 75g is rather small for SDs that will bolt.

Instead of them will other species of cichlids like lake Malawis be able to live with them

Your not going to like this but your at max capacity with an Oscar. At a yr your looking at roughly an 8-10" fish then with another few yrs a fat 12" or more oscar. Its a lot of fish for a 75 there's not much room for anything not considered food.

You could go with something expendable for awhile. A lot of people do dithers until they're fish gets big enough to not be shy
