Actually yes, there has been some breeding activity. I went away for the weekend, came back and the female had her tube dropped. She was guarding a certain area from all the other cichlids, sometimes even from the male. I don't think that they ever laid the eggs, but it was encouraging. She actually only seems to get the black 'beard' when she is ready to spawn. These were taken right after she pulled her tube up.
I think I need to add some slate or some other forum of spawning substrate in there. Maybe get a couple more females, and maybe one more male so that there would be more options.
She definitely pushes around the male, who is almost twice her size.
