I have 2 Cichla monoculus in a 210 gallon aquarium and there 24" each and there with two redtail catfish, and I am having no prblem with keeping them. They are perfectly healthy and enjoying there 210 with the redtail catfish!

I have read some forums on this site and I have heard that you need tanks up to 300-400 gallons big. That has not been true for me and I am starting to doubht the info bieng given out on this website. :screwy:

I have had them since they were 1.5" long and I have had them for two years straight. Even the proffessional fish keepers told me that they could be raised into a 210 there whole life!!

Keeping them in a 300 - 400 gallon tank is not neccesary. You can get away with keeping them in a 210 just like you are. There are quite a few hobbyists that also do it, I even know people breeding them in tanks that size. However, it is not ideal.

Do not doubt the info given on this site. People will usually state that cichla need larger aquariums simply because a 24inch fish will feel more comfortable in a 300-400gallon tank rather than in a 210. The people here are generally just looking out for the comfort of the fish and the general well being :) If it is working for you thats great, however im sure your cichla would appreciate a tank upgrade ;)

How big is the RTC? It is quite possible that he will outgrow the tank though....

BTW what do you class as a "professional fish keeper"?

Do not doubt the members here...

I think you will find it pretty hard to find hobbyists with a greater knowledge than some of the members on here.

I second the fact that you shouldn't disregard some of our members. they are very experienced. Now, what kind of filtration do you have on that 210 and what is your water changing regiment. in my opinion, the RTC's are a mistake for your tank.

i ahve 2 12" ones in a 8/3/3 footer on their own, they look kinda lost

Would love to see pix

Where abouts in AUS are you?

I have a 24" male and 14" female on their own in an 8x3x2.5. I couldn't imagine the male in any smaller tank, it just would not do the fish justice. To tell you the truth I feel the big guy is a bit cramped even in this tank. But it will do for now.
