After loosing a very special ray this week my friends have convinced me to get another ray in the semi near future. After speaking with RayO on here I have decided on one or a pair of pearl rays. My question is What is the scientific name so I can go to the LFS and get pricing and availability. I looked around and for some reason the "Florida" ray keeps coming up as the pearl ray's scientific name. Thanks again in advance for your help!!

This is the one I am looking for the scientific name for

Hi Blink.
Pearl rays have no scientific species name, they are from the genus potamotrygon and are simply known as Potamotrygon sp "pearl".
The one in the pic used to belong to Lode (I think) and is what i would describe as a very special Pearl as is the one in my avatar which belongs to me.This quality is few and far between and comands a high price, however there are plenty of Pearls to be had which are still very nice and well worth having at more reasonable prices, ask to see both Parent fish,if they float your boat then go for it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder,Pearls are very variable, this for me is what makes them interesting, its the same for Marbles.
Very sorry to hear of your loss, good that you are looking round again for a new ray,you started with a wild Reticulata, probably one of the hardest rays to acclimatise, from what I read you did nothing wrong so don't blame yourself, these things happen to us all, that little ray had no chance from the start like many that are imported. Many people start with Reticulata because they are the cheapest option to have a go,sadly too many die in the hands of the inexperienced or first ray keeper.....they are not a good starter ray even though they don't attain a huge size.
Don't jump at the first pearl you see, take your time then you won't be disappointed.
Good luck!

If my LFS can not get a pearl ray for me do you know of any places online that sell them? also what is the max size they reach?

Good luck finding a LFS that can bring one in. If you dont see it in person, make sure you get a video of it eating (they aren't cheap). Ask around here, there may be someone willing to part with a Pearl. They are very hearty from my experience. Far as size. they are comparable to Motoros and Leos 18-24"+ at adult size.

I just want another ray really bad now and after finding out the owner of the place that I bought hope(my ray that passed) from i'm pretty sure had no clue how to even feed him self pretty much starved her to death and sold her to me:-( There is a lfs near me that sells extremely healthy teacups. Do you think if I make sure it is eating really well and it is a good size It will be an ok choice to go with one again?

retics and pearls are very far apart. if your set on pearls you wont be satisfied with a retic. check into the marketplace section as there are some pearls up for sale now and your lfs wont be able to match the prices that people on here will have

My advice to u bro.. Dont go for Wild caught rays..
First off.. U need to take a long time to quarantine them..
Second.. They have most probably been heavily medicated already..
We all know that rays dont do well with medication..
Thridly.. Jus go ahead for a healthy captive bred ray..
Lastly.. Rays thrive on good water.. Good water good ray..
Keep the PH at 7.. ammonia zero.. U will do well..
feed him a variety of foods.. frozen to monster pellets..
Ur ray will definately be heathly and happy..

I have a pair of pearls for sale, I think JIMR has a pair as well. The price difference from a retic to a pearl is quite a bit tho.

That's what I am saving all my pennies...lol When it comes to my fish tank if I find a fish I want no matter the price if it is worth it I will save and save and save until I have enough for it.
