I want to naturally lower my PH over time to mimic the SA habitat. I know that a common way of doing this is using Peat Moss. I know you can find Peat Moss at places like Home Depot but it that safe to use in your aquarium? I'm looking for inputs from people who actually have used peat moss in their tanks where the peat moss wasn't purchased at a LFS. Please help.

Hi, I have been experimenting with peat moss, by making my own blackwater extract, to simulate SA river parameters. It seems to make my rbp's more relaxed and active. There is a recipe on one of the stickys that I used. I just made sure it said just peat moss for ingredients on the bag at the local garden store, with no chemical additives. it does lower your ph, which mine was at 7 is, so I ofsett that by adding baking soda to keep it level. I would research that, I am new to piranha keeping so, hopefully there will be some more posts for you.

If you are talking about the bags of dried peat moss, yes, it is safe to use in your aquarium.

If you want to take all precautions possible find one that is labeled "organic"... although peat moss isn't something that "manufacturers" would have any need to use non organic fertilizers on...
