PETCO Gravel????

Gravel rust??? Never seen that. I have seen brown algae form on the gravel because of lack of cirulation and lights being on too long. How often / much do u do water changes?? Just seems a little strange that gravel could rust. If its rusting then its not gravel but some metal substance. If that is the case it should be pulled out and replaced. However if it algae good water and shorting lighting hours would help alot. Also adding a powerhead for cirulaton could make a big differance..

little bit o algae, little bit o fish poo.. vacuum your gravel. gotta change the diapers every now and then..

How Does sand work?

Very similar to gravel actually... I was REALLY wary of switching to sand initially, because I was worried about the extra work involved (with only holding the siphon above the surface of the sand to get debris), but in all actuality, there isn't really any extra work.

If you rinse your PFS in a 5 gallon bucket (a little at a time) until it's clean (water runs clear) then there won't really be a cloud in your tank when you put it in. Also, while you are doing WCs, if you use a normal syphon, you can use the big end and get right into your sand just like it was gravel, but just tilt it to the side as the sand gets higher in your syphon, and the sand will fall right back down, unlike the poo. Sometimes I will get in there with the small siphon end and just suck out poo from the surface, but this just ends up being a 1-2 gallon mini-water change. No biggie!

So, in all, sand not only looks better, it's better for the fish, and it's cheaper! :headbang2

Sand is way better. When fish poop or miss food it doesnt fall under the substrate like gravel. So it easy to vacuum it up. The crap and excess food just stays on top of the sand or the current blows it off into the filter.

PFS is the way to go imo.
