Pigeon blood red oscars!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
AFAIK, Pigeon blood is just a name tacked on to denote a dark red color. Probably just a darker Red oscar
Probably just something that’s been made up to sell fish.
I don’t think I’ve seen one. Does it supposed to be more red or darker?
What makes it different?
Do you have a picture?

Pigeon blood discus have been around for 30 years, they're not always dark. The color varies on them, from light to dark, and always has-- I had them in their early days. As much as anything, peppering was a characteristic of early pigeon bloods, some had less than others. One of the prettiest ones I had was light with little peppering, but big and beautiful. The story I've seen from a reliable source is the original breeder named them orange/red in Thai native language; by the time they got here they were 'pigeon blood'.

Early in the PB era, 1991 probably, I saw a pair from a NY breeder he called Royal King discus, they were obviously a PB derivative. This was a high end shop owned by an oriental guy I became friendly with (don't remember his native country). In any case, he was plugged into the early PBs. These Royal Kings were spectacular fish, dramatic color, LARGE, expensive. Almost bought them on sight, but went home to think it over. Went back to get them a couple of days later... they were still there, but no longer for sale, the breeder had a change of heart about selling them. I couldn't blame him.

I've seen 'dragon blood' and other this and that 'blood' names applied to other fish, but not PB.

Right like “Blood” Parrots
Never heard pigeon blood attached to Oscars before this.
