I wanted to ask about the diet of my rhombeus compared to my ruby red spilo. lately I've been feeding them less live food (convict cichlids), and more raw shrimp(with shell) and raw chicken. they do not eat sinking carnivore pellets. my spilo does take freeze dried shrimp however. I also want to know if there are any foods that you could recomend in particular that could optimize the health of my fish better than the level they are currently at.

i'd try working in fish instead of chicken. Like talipia or whatever white meat your local grocery store has on ice.

i feed chicken only once or twice a month at the least. i have fed them tilapia(which they seemed to like). but once i started feeding them raw shrimp thier colors appeares to enhance. they liked the tilapia but should i consider that a staple food. are whole smelt good for the fish considering the whole fish is fed instead of just the meat of the fish.

I've heard shrimp also can bring out color. Smelt is good (lots of people here use that) but i find talipia cheaper here (may not be the case everywhere). The key to a good diet is also to feed a variety. You should use some type of fish (smelt, talipia, whatever) and shrimp as the staple and liven i up with your convict fry and chicken. YOu can also work in earthworm and silverside. Pellets are also good to work in as a staple

How do you figure? It's not the frozen raw shrimp where you get fish, hamburger, chicken, seafood etc in the grocery store? Or are you getting it from the frozen food section?

i get it at the frozen seafood section they are raw uncooked shell-on shrimp

Personally i'd take the shell off as most preservatives would probably be obsorbed there. Shrimp naturally come from salt water so the body shouldn't be an issue. It's the other preservatives that i'd be worried about but i doubt there's enough to cause a problem once the shell is removed.
