Dear fellow pleco enthusiasts,

I have only had glass tanks so far, and I would like to hear from you about your experiences with other tank materials. (I am planning a tank upgrade)
My L114 have shaved coats of Krylon Fusion spray paint off PVC pipes, and I am wondering what they would do to a fiberglass or acrylic tank. I have anecdotally read about royals ruining acrylic tanks. But the thing is: We are /\/\onsterfishkeepers .... the bigger the fish, the bigger the tank, and at some point glass simply gets too heavy to be practical.

Kindly share your experiences, it'd be great if you could distinguish between acrylic and fiberglass tanks, and the plecos of course :hearts: .

Thanks,
HarleyK

Quiet crowd 🙃
Searching the last corners of the internet, I came across a guy who alleged that his bristle nose clouded acrylic...
And on our forum @Dr Joe wrote about a "a pleco that ate his way thru 3 layers of fiberglass to get to the plywood...What a mess that was." 😳 I hope that only applies to DIY wood tanks...but who knows?
Let me invite a few folks who may have not had this thread on their radar and who have Royals or other /\/\onster plecos ... maybe in fiberglass or acrylic tanks...?

Thank you guys, I'd greatly appreciate you all sharing your experiences.

Much obliged,

Thanks for the invite @HarleyK. I have a ton of plecos, but unfortunately, I have zero experience w/ acrylic tanks.. All my tanks are glass. I'll ask a few of my fellow pleco addicts and let you know if any of them have / had any experience w/ acrylic..

BTW, I've read even glass tanks can be ruined by some species like Leporacanthicus.. I've read they can eat the silicone in the seams... and I have 4.. 😳

I remember years ago there were post about plecos and acrylic tanks. Some of them were chewing up the acrylic tanks. Mainly the panaques were mentioned.

Thank you guys so much, @bkfamus @Midwater @kno4te . I appreciate your posts.
I, too, have only ever had glass tanks. But glass would be too heavy to bring down a staircase, for what I am planning for my basement...
Silicone seam-eating plecos, that's stuff for nightmares 😳

I've seen big Pseudas put scratches on acrylic, but not that often- they don't really seem to mess with the walls of the tank too much. I never had Leporacanthicus mess with silicone at all, but given their bite force and gnarly dentition I wouldn't be surprised if they could cause some damage if they wanted.

No I have not. Had no clue thank you for the info I had no idea they can affect the acrylic so far they are just growing out biggest one is maybe under 7 inches. How soon should I be worried? I have a 180 glass SA/CA/Oddball predator tank. They eat right through the acrylic? Now I am worried.
