hi

have anyone used a pond filter for a fish tank or do you think it can be done because fx5 are so expensive and pond filter are cheaper and are about the same power and what sort of pond filter i need to make it work.

what do you think

thanks

What sort of set up where you thinking of exactly? I've seen pond filters used on big display tanks at some LFS but always above the tank. Remeber an FX5 is water tight and has a pump built in so can sit beneath the tank but the big black pond filter boxes aren't and don't.

i thinking of getting a 5ft x 2.5ft x 2ft tank with 2 hystrix ,asain arowana , heros and dat, and i though it would be a lot cheaper and give be very good filter.clean water.

Yeah they could be used, but there's loads of different ways you could go with one and you'd probably need to drill your tank and do quite a bit of DIY. Depending where the tank is and if it matters, it may not look pretty either! All depends what you're after. Remember, you'll have to buy a pump and all the pipe work and fittings too which will all add to the expense.

Have you looked at eheim canisters too? Or thought about a home made sump? (that's probably the cheapest option.)

i don't really know that much about filters, i had a look and i was thinking about a biological filter or a Pressure filter. i if i can't use them then i will do a diy filter if that the cheapest and give me good clean water ,but i would not know were to start.

i was thinking about sump but don't they had lot more weight. the tank is going upstairs, iam going to add support.

i have look at eheim filter and they are not cheaper because i found a new fx5 for £150

From what i can remember, the general thinking is you need a tank/tub that holds 1/4 the capacity of water in your tank. Divide it into sections so water goes in one side from the tank, through mechanical, and bio filtration, then a pump at the end to pump it back into the tank. You'd need an overflow from your tank down to the sump and remember not to put too much water in as when the pump stops water will keep flowing down until it's below the overflow level. Sumps are also good for hiding things like heaters in rather than having them in the tank. There's going to be loads of designs and ideas for that in the DIY and Filtration forums on here. Never built one myself, i've just been too lazy!

pressure filter usually have a back flush feature to clean the pads inside but u still will have to take it apart for a good clean so no real convenience but a good choice would be something like a Tetra pond biofilter ''PF-1'' easy to clean good water quality for a pond or for your tank i have both but now have a diy hooked to mine similar to the pf-1

i have been thinking and do research, so the ones i can use are the ones with two pipes on becuse the dirt water goes in and then the clean water come out. the ones wiht 3 pipes i can't use becuase one of them is for the sludge come out and i can't have that is the tank , so is this correct.
