ive been doing a lot of research lately about DIY tanks. for my budget it seems like a plywood tank fits the bill. the only part that has me worried is the price of everything i seem to find to seal up the inside.

i got to thinking about it and came up with this idea. build the typical plywood box, up to the point of sealing it. instead of sealing it with epoxy or whatever, what about using a pond liner? they are thick, 40mil. they are fish safe. they are flexible. they are much cheaper than any paint type sealer i have found.

it seems to me that the only difficult part of using the soft liner would be getting a good seal around the window.

maybe use some sort of spray adhesive on the inside of the face frame to hold it in place so you could cut it for the window. do your best to take out any wrinkles (there would be some), but even if they werent all gone, i think it would add a nice visual.

has anybody heard of trying a pond liner? can you think of any pros/cons?

btw- im looking at building something in the 150g - 200g range

I have a pond liner in my 180gallon, been setup for almost a year now. Gonna be using a pond liner for my 450 also when I finish building that. My 180 I have a acrylic window, and my 450 I will be having 2 21"x47" windows.

I used Marine Adhesive 5200 I believe it was? I didnt even wait for the 7 day cure and I have yet to have a leaking problem. I even moved a month ago and the tank still doesnt even leak.

heres my 180gallon when I put the window in.

I wouldnt say plastic, id say rubber:) but yes it is the flexible kind.

would you be using glass or acrylic?

I went the acrylic route because pond liner isnt stable when you fill/drain the tank and in my mind cause some leakage with just glass stuck to it. Thus why I used the marine 5200 as a sealant and bolted my window to the plywood. With it bolted I have ZERO worries.

I just bought 2 sheets of acrylic 3/4" thick 21"x47 3/4" for $112.00 shipped, so if your worried about the price, ebay is your best bet. I just happened to look and it saved me $500.00

With glass I guess you "COULD" bolt it to the plywood to by using some kind of frame around it to hold it in place.

i was going to go with whatever was cheapest. i want to avoid bolting the window in altogether, im not really a fan of that look. this tank will be in my front room as a display tank.
