Pond Matrix Vs. Regular Matrix

Is there a significant difference between the 2. I need over a gallon for my new FX5 I'm picking up and I was wondering if it would be better to use the pond or the regular? Anyone have any experience with the two?

A canister of matrix is going to decrease a lot of gph in your can, that stuff is dense and interlocks, for a can I would go with a bigger bio media, hollow ceramic rings have holes in them and allow better flow thru them, api chem stars are great too for cans! Congrats on getting an fx5!

I don't think there is a difference to answer your question, maybe the size?

get Pond Matrix it will be perfect for your FX5

Pond matrix, just bought 5 gallons worth. Heard great things about it. Hold tons more BB then other media on the market according to seachem that had tested other media.
Will start cycling tank today :)

Or is it better to use the more expensive FLuval Biomax?

Just buy bulk ceramic rings online, you can get a ton of it for cheap! Just saying the density of matrix with all baskets full will greatly reduce gph, rings will also reduce flow but not as much. I've seen some matrix that is bigger then other, that would be better then the small stuff.

or you could be like me, have a sump and use matrix, rings and bio balls because youre an idiot and didnt plan ahead. at least I'm covered for different scenarios I guess

if you want higher flow, go with the pond matrix. I have 6G of pond matrix combined with 20 lbs. of alfa grog in a 12"x13"x24" and have no issues running 850 GPH through it.

Lol. Bb ain't to picky! In my fx5 I used to have fluval bio max, ac bio max, fluval cnodes and api chem stars. Now its all api chem stars and I love em!
