I might get a 29 gallon and plan to have some multies in there, are there any possible tankmates I could have? I was thinking something that stays more towards the top or middle just because I think the tank would look a bit empty if I only had some multies, I was thinking possibly some smaller julies or other small tanganyika cichlids

Your options are somewhat limited in a 29, so I would look for smaller, open water species such as Aulonocranus Dewindti. You may also be able to get away with some smaller Julidochromis, but remember that these are a rock dwelling species, so a tank with the two will require separate, distinct zones. One with and abundance of shells, and one with rocky outcrops with a nutral zone between them. A deep sandbed (2-3") will also be appreciated by many shell dwellers, although not critical for multies.

well the aulonocranus dewindti would get to be 5 inches, the julidochromis I think would be better, I do plan on getting a lot of aragonite and shells, but I don't think I'd have the room

I think the size on the Julies is more important than the size of the Aulonocranus simply because the Julies will create a teritory around it's chosen rocks, which will be lower in the tank and potentially closer to the Multies.
