Pre-filter installation

GVC

Feeder Fish
Hello community!People I need your opinion..I am a FX4 & Eheim 600 cannisters holder. I want to know if anyone here had/have install a pre-filter to fx4. I have o thought to use the eheim 600 as a prefilter with sponge internal only and the fx4 full of biological media. I don't know what is the reduce of flow. Another thought is to make the above set-up and both of filters be plug in..

P.S Sorry for the laguage i am from Greece and me English is not very good. I hope no one of you have shocked... ?

Welcome to MFK!!

I have never used pre-filters on a canister filter intake as they can get clogged rather quickly. I also would not use the Eheim filter as a pre-filter for the FX4.

I find that setting up the filters as designed works very well as both canisters will have mechanical and bio-media and you can alternate cleaning each filter regularly.

Why do you want to use a pre-filter on the FX4?

I have been doing this for years-
All my filters (2 FX6, 1 Hydor 450, 5 AC 110's, 4 AC 200, 2 Penguin 330B)
have a prefilter made of a piece of plastic window screen, folded over the intake (held with two rubber bands).
They reduce amount of junk in, without restricting flow much.
I clean all every week with water changes. Media inside each HOB filter is cleaned (in aquarium water) each weekk Canister are cleaned every ~3 months.
Rarely I need to clean one prefilter or another before a week, such as if I trim plants or things like that.
Each little roll of screen is reused each time, they last for 2-3 months or more.

Before this I used sponges around the intakes. They work but clog too much. The screens work much better.

Good luck!

Hi again!! I want to install this set up to earn all the capacity of fx4 with biological media and eheim 600 full volume with mechanical media and maybe some purigen, round 200-300gr for clear water. That I don't know if purigen influence to biolology of aquarium. Actually, want to run the aquarium with tropheus kasanga rainbow moorii, roynd 20pieces. I think if can earn all the volume of fx4 with biological media is better.

I would recommend installing a sponge on the intakes inside the aquarium. If you setup two canister filters in series you are drastically reducing the flow inside your aquarium, as well as loosing your redundancy. If one canister fails then both fail and you end up with a tank crash.

Hmmm, now need have seconf thoughts about the reduducing flow..I thought that if both cannisters are plug in the first work like a booster..
