Getting my first one today. Any advice from someone who has had them before?

The only reason why I'm asking is because I'm hearing mixed things (Groups vs Single - Types of foods - Size)

Thank you!

Watching as I got one two days ago as well. Mine so far is an algea eating machine. Had cleaned the back glass and now grazing trails like this are on my rocks.15439632996112045473403.jpg
I have tossed in a couple algeamax wafers and pellets. Not sure if it's Thor or Bestie the aquacow that eats them. It's a omnivore so eats everything.15439637401911257822365.jpg

I got one for my 180 community tank about 2 years ago. My research beforehand told me that they are kept as a single fish or they will fight. 99% of tanks i've seen with flagtails in only have one specimen so I guess the fighting thing is true. Saying that though I have also seen very large tanks with multiple specimens in where they get along fine. Maybe they like their own individual space, something that smaller tanks don't give for multiple fish.

Mine is extremely peaceful, I got him when he was only 3"or so and he is about 6" now. Some would say he should be bigger than that, they do grow rapid given the right conditions. The reason mine is only growing slow is because he is in with tinfoils, among others, and anyone with tinfoils will tell you they are eating machines. I believe mine just dosen't get enough food, simple as that, or I would have a 9" fish now instead of a 6" fish.

Eating wise, i've found mine will eat anything, though they do require a diet rich in algae/plant based ingredients. Mine has a peculiar habit of sucking in individual morsels of food and eating that morsel before he will take anything else, rather than just blitz the food and get a right mouthful. Again, I think this isn't helping with his growth rate, but whether other flagtail owners have experienced this I don't know.

They are a beautiful fish and once happy in their surroundings their colouration is striking. The one above looks a bit washed out, though jexnell hasn't had it long. Those fin and tail colours will pop given time. I've had no experience of skittishness, jumping or being a pain to his other tank mates. He is a little joy, by far my favourite fish at the minute. If I had a decent camera which would do his colours justice i'd post a pic.

Hope my little incite into the flag tail helps.
