Can anyone tell me about what habitat they like? I know the ph and hardness that they need, but will they do ok in a South American themed tank with driftwood and plants?

i have a tank full of different victorian cichlids.just make shure you do weekly water changes.i do about 20 to 25 percent of the water depending on how many fish you have.i have lots of lace rock and live anubus plants.i wouldn't pute them with big american cichlids same size is ok.also i have 2 at 4 inch and they can be really mean.they are the king of the tank even beats up my 5 and 6 inch african cichlids. good luck.

i thought that most woods bring down ph. i would advise aginst wood for this species.
i have kept and bred many of this genus,
naturally they are rock dwellers, also very little plant matter they live in rock crevasas, in lake victoria, boulders and the like. i dont think they will thrive in a s/a theamed tank.

I agree no wood. Sandy bottom with lots of rock formations to form caves and tunnels. Regular water changes and a constant temperature.

I have 2 xmas fulu(m+f),2 hippo Point Salmon(m+f), ruby green hap and rock crib from victoria - lotsa caves + plants..................crushed coral + clay sub w/ driftwood @ 76 degrees keeps PH @ 8.0
