Hi All,
Thought I'd share my spawn of Rainbow Shiners. Not really a monster fish, but the males do get 'monster' coloring during breeding. They get an awesome red.
I couldn't find much information on the spawning, so I thought I'd post my experience here to archive and share.
Conditioning: 18 fish: conditioned with BBS, freeze dried blood worms and brine shrimp flake
Water temp: 72 F
Location: Northern CA, water is hard
Tank size: 20 gallon
Notes: research suggested that they spawn over larger rocks, so I placed a bunch of 2 inch river rocks in clear dixie cups so that I could harvest the eggs after the spawn.
After the spawn, i moved them to a hang on breeder box.
Spawn date: 10/30/2020
Hatch: 10/31/2020 (I was surprised that they hatch that fast)
Free Swimming: 11/7/20 Until then, they were laying on the bottom of the hang-on breeder box, looking like slivers of glass, for almost a week. Light would cause them to scatter. Wasn't sure if they were eating the BBS at this time. Threw in some finely crushed brine flake. By 11/9/20 I could tell they were eating BBS, but I lost quite a few by the 9th.
Learnings: I banked on feeding them BBS. I think they need something smaller in the beginning. I plan to try vinegar eels next time around. Additionally, I think many left the breeder box and were eaten (I used a section of coarse filter pad to block the outflow, but I think the pores were still too large), so I'll move them to a different tank in round 2.
Enjoy!
