Yea that’s the sound they make. It’s similar to a channel cat talking. It’s always neat to hear them talk.

When mine’s out of water it makes a grunting noise like that. Fish never cease to surprise me!

Spontaneous update. I hadn't seen him for at least 6 months. So I had to take a quick picture when I just saw him. Already 26 years in our care. Must be around 28 years old by now.

Wow that's incredible! Have you measured him?

In the video in the first post he is around 23cm / 9".
He also looks a bit skinny in the picture, so we'll increase feeding.

Yeah it's always hard to tell how they're eating when you don't see them for months. I had one for s few years that got rehomed when i moved. I really only saw him a few times a year when i had him and always wondered if he was eating.

He is definitely eating guppy fry. But I don't know if gets much of the other food.

We have had one since 1992 but it's not grown as large as yours, maybe 7" at a push. It's also very reclusive but luckily it's retreat can be seen from the front, so we know it's still going. I don't remember the last time I saw it out.
