Hi guys,

Recently bought a fish that was sold to me as a red dovii, but the guy said that it would only get around 8 inches and not be as aggressive, just wondering if this is true as research suggests that it could get close to 2/2.5 feet like a normal dovii, i dont know if its some kind of hybrid or something, worse case scenario i have a 180 he can have to himself, bigger in the future, thanks for any help at all, i really appreciate it, just wondering what you guys think it actually is

Looks like one of the Nicaraguan Amphilopines to me.
The mouth and jaw ion the OP pic is distinctly different than that of a normal dovii, as is body type.

Above true Parachromis dovii
The mouth in the OP fits that of the genus Amphilophus , amarillo (below)

Do you think it could be a trimac x red devil? when it was smaller it had more black/green markings

Looks like a typical Amphilophine to me.
In every one of the Nicaraguan lakes, there are multiple color morphs of each species.
If it is a hybrid, the only way to know for sure what the parents were, would be a DNA test.
And why would it matter if it is a hybrid, a mutt is a mutt is a mutt.

If wo knowing where it came from , like Duane I would have no interest in it, it’s not even close to a Dovii if I had to guess prob some amphilophus mix

I just looked at the title again, and realized......doh
maybe the store person meant to say red devil?
Because that's what most call generic Amphilophus.

Of course even it it was dovii I wouldn't have any interest, because my tank is only 180 gallons, unless I have a tank of 300 gallons or more buying a dovii is kind of ridiculous.

Possibly, he did say red dovii multiple times on multiple separate occasions and hasn’t made any mistakes before but first time for everything ig, thanks for the help, i’ll proceed under the assumption that its some sort of red devil/ midas thing, and will see if its more identifiable as it gets bigger, i did think it was unlike a dovii- and the 180 was only gonna be temporary, til he outgrew it and would go in a 500
