I just got a 6 inch red tail payara and I can't get him to eat.
When I got him 2 days i was told he was eating live food and white bait.
I have 3 platys in with him just now but he won't touch them any suggestions would be helpful thanks.

Would wait it out as probably getting used to the tank. Will eventually see the plates missing.

I also have 6 inch payara had for over a year now, when I move him to another tank he can take up to 2 weeks to start eating again, if he eat the fish you would be able to see his belly swallon, what other fish you got in with him

Be careful what fish you keep with him or you might find your other fish with there stomach ripped out, unfortunately I know this from experience

This has been my experience with payara as well. When I bought home my very first red tail within mere minutes after being released from the bag it took down an Apollo shark that was almost it's same length...good sign for a new fish but that is not the norm with them.
Just leave it be to settle in and it will start eating when it is ready.

Problem you might have is the pacu taking all the food, I have a 18 inch pacu in another tank and it’s first to the food every time, it eats everything, my payara on the other hand likes to hunt its food,, good luck with your new fish,,,,,, Payara are expensive to look after and need very good water conditions.. but are a good fish to keep for experienced fish keepers.. let us know how you get on

I will thanks guys yes pacu are fast when food goes in that's why I drop it at one side of tank then some for payara at his side
