This is Cypher. He's supposed to be a red texas. He doesn't seem to have gotten the memo, but given how gorgeous he is, I can't even be upset about it.

A little over a year ago I bought 6 two inch red texas babies from Thailand. I eventually sold off four and now have two left. Neither has peeled, and I'd long ago given up on that but really loved the way they looked anyway and kept them. But I noticed recently that both *might* actually peel eventually...if you look at the edges of his mouth, Cypher has a bit of orange. Never used to be, was black before. The other has the same orange around it's mouth too. So I guess maybe, could be late bloomers? I'll actually probably be sad if he peels at this point. He's stunning the way he is.

My phone takes really crappy fish pics, so video included too.

Well, whether he changes color eventually or not is moot. Still a nice looking fish.

Real nice pearls and body im sure he can still fade at a larger size some take longer.

Red texas breeders at first selected for young faders. Hoping to lock that gene in the pool to further progeny to help select,(keep/cull) starting at an earlier age. Certain red texas breeders noticed a trend that you're now seeing. The late bloomers. Most but not all, tend to be a darker shade of orange or red beneath. For this reason, those same certain breeders began holding onto them and furthering them as well. Some of your more noted SRT/RT late blooming breeders are POMTexas on FB, and GK Red Texas on FB. POM has hands down the most fertile line of red texas, while GK has the most intense reds I've seen without enhancements. Now to couple it and make it even more weird is that they can begin fading, stop completely, and in more rare cases reverse altogether in a strange way.

SRT/RT are probabaly the most unstable hybrid line IMO, the combination is simple but the outcome is anything but. Add the fact that the secret got lose very early 2000's and it got muddied with GB flowerhorn (red-eyed red texas considered impure), midas/red devil, not to mention festae. So many hands in the mixing pot, some with less than pure intentions. The early flowerhorn game worked because there were no loose lips to sink any ships. They kept their business to themselves and only released when perfect and ready. But I digress, thats a later talk.

All in all hes a gorgeous specimen, and I would be elated to have him as much as you are!:) only word of advice I have is this. Since hes began fading, and decides to go and revert, any places that revert will not have pearling thats already been lost during fade. What comes back to cover the orange red will just be an off sooty black. So I do encourage you to help him if hes gonna go for it. I do love the dragon scaled pearling he has, if he fades more please update 🙏 😀

Yeah I'm not upset at all that my SRT is blue, lol. He's so damn gorgeous as he is, that's why I kept him over some that were showing more orange. He was still the nicest. Will be interesting to see if he does peel as he matures. Super slow grower, I've had him myself for a year and so he's gotta be about a year and a half old now, but he's only about 5". The second one is slightly larger, doesn't have the nice trailing fins that Cypher has and is more blue spangles on a black base, also really gorgeous. But does seem to be changing more now after being stable that way for quite a while.

Well I can definitely say your red Texas look 10x better then my old boy here. Had him for a lil over a year now and he's showed no signs of peeling at all.

Thanks. Cypher is so pretty that I'm honestly not sad at all that he is still blue, and I'll be quite happy if he stays that way. BUT I'm not sure he will...the orange around the corners of his mouth seems more pronounced, and there's a bit of orange around his eyes now too...plus, if his sibling in the other tank is anything to go by, they're late bloomers and hitting the peel mark around now. The other one is definitely leaning into the orange colour more significantly now.
