same goes for my betta, he sees bloodworm the circles it for about 30secs then realises he can eat it lol
I normally feed my betta frozen blood worms as a treat. When I gave him frozen blood worms, he didn't know what to do with them.

You know apart from the usual reasons to not feed feeders, I personally don't because it's too much work for me to:
- go to a lfs every week to get a bunch of feeders
- keep the feeders in a separate aquarium. Not to mention that the aquarium you're keeping them in has to be cycled and clean.
- net out fish every day and feed them to my predators.
Training predators to accept non live food is hard; at the begenning. But after that:
- throw a handful of pellets into your aquarium and be fine with it. OR
- cut up some frozen tilapia (or catfish or salmon or whole silversides) and chuck it in!

If your going to feed your fish live food, quarantine them. I was planning to breed some rosie reds in my 10g to feed my oscar so I could have my own supply, and the ones I got from the lfs all died within a week. So, I don't trust the ones from the store. If your going to feed your fish live food, quarantine them. I was planning to breed some rosie

Parasites are one of the biggest risks.

I just had to treat a florida gar I got from a buddy for TAPEWORM. Pretty much all that he fed this fish previously was feeders. This is the likely source of the parasites in this case.

Aside from that feeders tend to be a far more expensive way to feed your fish.

Myself I usually rely on a "teacher fish" that already eats pellets or frozen to show the new fish what to do. I've found most fish will convert rather quickly in this case.

Really not much nutritional value in feederfish anyway, mostly fats and oils and gross pathogens that kill your fish

When I still had my pike cichlid. It was fed live feeders from lfs. So what I did was quarantine the feeders and fed them with good pellets. I would fed the feeders to the pike cichlid and slowly toss a feeder that I killed on purpose. Eventually it'll learn to eat the killed ones and then I would slowly switch it over to just killed feeders to frozen silversides. Once my pike started eating frozen silversides I stopped with the feeders and would just stuff the frozen food with pellets. It's a hassle but at least it's off live feeders. Less chance of infection.
