Six or eight months ago I bought an RO filter so I won’t have to keep using rainwater for my soft water fish (discus and Satanoperca). I bought a five stage 100 gallon per day system from max water. I removed the end stage carbon filter as unnecessary, so it is really a four stage.

Since I have hard water fish as well (American cichlids), I use the “wastewater“ as well as the filtered (it has been through the particulate and charcoal filters, so chlorine and multiple contaminants are removed, leaving moderately higher minerals). It goes into separate 50 gallon barrels. My tapwater ranges from 100 to 150 PPM depending on rainfall and the river water characteristics. My RO filtered water is usually 5 or 6 PPM, and the “wastewater“ is 150 to 200 PPM.

Recently, I noticed that my RO filtered water barrel is filling up almost as quickly as the wastewater barrel, instead of 1/3 as fast. The only thing I can think of to cause this would be a leak in the RO filter. However, that should cause the RO water to get much harder. It does measure a little harder, but only to 10–11 PPM. (Wastewater is still about 150PPM).

MaxWater hasn’t responded to my questions and I wonder if anyone here has an idea what this means???

I used a Nanopure RO/DI unit, and found the cartridges needed regular replacement. (at least every 6 months, with the volume we used)
One clue for needed preplacement , was always a slight increase in hardness.
But I never noticed faster flow, probably because I was working in a lab, it was just standard proceedure to replace cartridges every 6 months no matter what.
