Rotkeil severum?

Hi there.

I’m trying to confirm if I indeed have a rotkeil severum or a regular one. 2 years ago I bought a f1 rotkeil severum from a local breeder. He was tiny just over 1” and appeared to have 8 stripes, not 9.



I hope you can see him in the back while the albino heckelii photobomb.


Fast forward today he got bigger, although kind of slowly, and it’s around 5.5”. I kept waiting for some red to show but nothing so far. I had read somewhere it should start to show above 4“.




Anyone else seen something like this with rotkeil sevs? Is there hope he might develop some red on the shoulder/cheek area?

I see no worming on the face so you have a female. Markings are in line with a rotkiel.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I did not know about the sex differences, I thought I would have to vent it.
If I look super closely I can imagine some red showing up lol. A fine fish still.

She‘s kind of the tank boss and bully. A small tank for her (65g) but the upgrade (150g) is sitting empty waiting for a sump part to get it cycling.
I’m considering adding another rotkeil later, can 2 females live together ok?
