Here is some info available using its scientific name
It was first described in 1840 from the Rio Negro and Orinoco in Venezuela.
It is from black, slightly acidic water (pH below 7) found in moving streams with a high oxygen content (it is a slightly rheophillic species)
It is a mouthbrooder that places eggs on a substrate, but both parents share mouth brooding the fry as soon as they hatch.
Males grow slightly larger than females
Good tank mates would be medium size tetras from that same area, and water type, and corydorus cats.
Other aggressive cichlids that vie for territory wouldn't be considered desirable.
