I've had many of the community tank fish over the years and among the most non-aggressive I can recall would be Rummy Nose Tetras. Super easy to get along w/ every time.

A week or so back I saw a couple dozen Rummy Nose and brought them all home. They were a little different than I had seen before and were sold as Peruvian Rummy Nose. They all have a longitudinal black stripe that went about 1/3 of the way from the caudal peduncle (the root of the tail) forward. I dropped them into a tank that had been well colonized by Neocaridinas, 3 Neons rescued from a buddy moving out of state, Endlers and some Corries. It's a heavily planted tank and there were several hundred shrimp.

These are the first Rummy Nose I can recall as being rude tank mates. I didn't notice it for a few days but realized today that they've mowed down hundreds of shrimp.

At this rate it might be the end of the colony soon.

Anyone else have experience to report? Mine look like they're about the size of standard Rummy Nose Tetras but not quite as vibrantly colored on the head and in that most LFS don't sell mature fish (and these are what I'd expect as full size based on past experience)... maybe this Peruvian variety gets significantly bigger(?) Any experience?

Aside from the stripe and the attitude they seem nearly identical to the standard kind.

I only have one left out of a group that's over 2yrs old tankmates Black Neons, 2 Banjo Catfish, and 3 Amazon Bumblebee Catfish.
The one I have looks exactly like the top pic.
My Black Neons are always bickering with each other so the Rummynose stays out of their way 😆

The ones I've had in the past looked like the top pic as well. They too seemed pretty quick to bail out if a skirmish was in the horizon.

Not these dudes.

The Rummynose in the bottom looks awesome. I never seen the Rummynose get rowdy but tetra do have spats with each other.

Never had those before only the common ones cuz I think they look better. But in general any fish that has mouth big enough to eat shrimps eventually will. Even my cardinal tetras hunt down my shrimps. They also have a platinum variant of rummynose and they look nice. Usually sold overseas tho

For future:

If you are looking for Rummy Nose Tetras specifically for their docile nature make sure you select the right variant. These Peruvian jobs aren't as feisty as tiger barbs or similar but they most definitely are carnivorous and will definitely kill shrimp, live bearer spawn, etc.

They seem to be fine w/ the Neons (and the Endlers). I don't think they're inclined to attack other fish but rather that they are not as docile as whatever kind of Rummy Nose I've had in the past. I had assumed that anything that looked like a Rummy Nose must be peaceful as I'd never seen any other behavior from them. The live born fry and shrimp in my tank would vote otherwise for sure.

There's a giant plant in that tank so some will survive but I definitely won't think of it as my shrimp tank moving forward.
