Hey

I have a Sailfin Plec around 6”. I’ve had him for about 6 months and he was previously quite timid. Although he would be quite active and often visible grazing on the wood, he would usually bolt and hide whenever I go near the tank and always when I opened the hood. However, once his slice of courgette went in, he would go straight at it and chow down. Recently, he all of a sudden became less timid and doesn’t seem to be bothered by my presence at all. But at the same time, he seemed to stop eating. After a few days of him not touching the courgette, I decided to leave it in overnight. By morning, almost the whole thing had gone and despite trying feeding every day, every other day, only feeding after lights out, it’s always the same – the veg gets eaten, but I never see him touch it. He shares with a Lima Cat who definitely wouldn’t be eating the veg.

To make things even weirder, he always seems to be hungry in the evening, yet doesn’t even seem to acknowledge the veg I put in. By the time I get home from work, he’s usually grazing every square inch of the tank and often comes to the corner of the tank closest to my sofa and sits there staring at me, which is what he previously always did before I fed him. I have 2 hang on glass algae scrubbers and every couple of days, I’ll change their position, leaving thick green algae on the glass. When I do this, he’s all over the algae in seconds, whether the lights are on or not.

Any ideas what could of caused the change in behaviour? Really starting to bug me as leaving the food in overnight is starting to effect water quality and maybe even the fish’s health as he’s probably eating more than he should.

Cheers

Steve
