Sand for stingrays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my favorite sand is Estees Marine Sand (ive never personally used it for stingrays but a friend of mine did and never had any problems) i like this brand b/c it does NOT need washing at all! just dump it in and fill up the tank - plus it doesnt suck up that much when you do a cleaning - the only problem is that i think it only comes in 5lb bags (i used to get it special ordered for me, id get like 5 boxes of 4, 5lb bags)

i dont think it comes in natural color (i always used black) i think they have some strange colors like red or green

sand looks good in all tank if you can put up with it sticking to the rays body

you could try a fine gravel sand mix that shouls stop the sand sticking to the ray so much

Pool filter sand. It is 100% quartz and it is a larger grain than most other sands. It does not get sucked up into filters and ruin impellars.

$8/50 lbs.

I have been using tahitian moon sand for a while. I like it and have had no issues with it. I have heard of people having problems but the caribsea stuff I'm using seems to be fine. Over tha last few months my rays have darkened up considerably on the black sand. It does however have a tendancy to stick to them a bit. I hope this helps your decision, good luck with your rays!

i have never usesd sand as i hate the way it sticks to black rays disk

if the sand is larger and quartz wont it be sharp like glass and cut or irratte the rays underside

sand does look great but another thing that has put me off is my tank is acrylic with the sand stuck to the rays disk when the rays glass swims it will be like rubbing a sheat of sand paper on the tank

This sand does not seem to irritate the bottom of the ray and it is big enough that it does not stick like the smaller sand grains.

I have not had the scratching problems from the rays on acrylic or glass. However, I do have to be careful when scrubbing any algae that is close to the bottom of the tank. It can get stuck in the scrubber.

It has worked very well for me. The picture is a close up of the sand on my large 16"+ female motoro. You can see how large the grain is. When she moves, the sand rolls right off. I also added a picture of a pup on the sand.

mm that looks like a sand and gravel mix

have you kept black rays on that kind of sand as i find it sticks to them more than it does to motoro it may just be it stands out more on black rays

My female leopoldi is on it as well. It does show up on her more.

I do add 5 lbs. of fine dark brown gravel to every 50 lbs. of sand. I just like the way it looks.
