OK, so I decided to go with a pair of severums (one turquoise/green and one gold) in my restocked 55 gallon. Both are juvies right now. I also have three tiger barbs in there (from my previous tank). Do you guys think there is room in there for a smaller species of pleco that won't outgrow the tank and also maybe a small group of giant danios? I'm just looking for ways to fill out the tank with some non-cichlid species. Thanks.

if you are planning on moving out the severums eventually then yes to the pleco or a small school of danios. how big are the severums? if your not moving out the severums i recommend getting rid of all other fish and MAYBE they will be alright, but either way the severums will most likely outgrow a 55.

Severums generally aren't very aggressive. Therefore, no aggressive tankmates. Geos, Uaru, etc are good. A 55 may be too small for tankmates though.

I would stick with just the two severums, and maaybe a clean up crew like some corie cats. The severums may be small and unimpressive now, but within 6-8 months, they should be around 6 inches or more. i once had 6 gold sevs and they grew pretty fast. I ended up with one female and 5 males, and they did alot of lip locking but that was it.

You might find the TB's nipping up your sevs. I'd say if you want a pleco get a single bristlenose or smaller species, maybe a group of cory cats. Group of danios might be pushing it but you could always move the barbs out and replace them with the danios.

If it is non-cichlids you're looking for, I'd go with a school of buenos aires tetras and a bottom fish of your choice, pleco etc

my sevs are starting to get big but they tolerate tankmates except when spawning so remember that if you have a m/f pair. my sevs are 5-6" now. i have 2 small geos, 3 small dats. and a royal pleco(i had a syno cat for a long time in there). they doing mind the pleco at all and didnt bother the cat fish.

Two sevs in a 55 are fine, but it will limit what you can add. I've never had a sev that cared anything about plecos or corys. While sevs aren't that aggressive most of the time they do still get to be a good size and if you have a mean one there will be trouble. Small tank mates that are open swimmers will be seen as food. No small tetras or small danios. I had a few buenos aries with mine that were a little larger, closer to thier max size of 3". Bleeding heart, congo, or black skirt tetras may be fine if they are already close to thier max and they require the same water parameters. I like the cory idea. Those guys are always busy and bring some movement to the tank.
