Yes, I know that the only sure way is to watch them breed and look at the ovipositor. And I also know that most mature males will develop a crown.

But does any Angelfish breeder know other ways to sex them visually. (Ex. Their fins grow differently in direction or in color.)
It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. I just need a better chance of getting a pair.
I am planning to buy 4 and grow them out and hopefully get a pair.

There has to be a great angelfish breeder on here that knows some trick of the trade. :)

Thank in advance.

On well-fed angels, males appear thinner bodied than females which tend to be more plump. There are no finnage distinctions like other cichlids.

You've already describe the best two methods, but the crown on mature males is only prominent on old males.

You are right , there is no trustable method to to find gender of fish . the crowned head can be seen on an older male . and as you say , this only determined only in breeding where male have small , long tube and female have broad tube .

Hi, I have three freshwater angelfish and they are about six months or so old. I cannot tell the sex of these fish but they do pick at each other most of the time and they are very sensitive PH changes.

there is no way to sex angels unless they are about to start breeding and then you can look at the tubes that extend below the abdomen. Males have pointier thinner tubes, females have rounder fatter tubes.

ive got 2 young males (6 months) with a crown developing on their head so i dont think thats only a feature of older male angels

just to give you an idea of the size of the fish, i didnt trap him in the corner, just held my hand there and let him play with it a bit.
