I got a new aquarium that I THINK is 38 gallons. I put it on my nightstand(only place I could really put it) and about 1 ½ inches is hanging off the edges. Is this dangerous or will I be fine? my parents got away with an inch hanging off both sides of there 55g.

Get a large piece of plywood and set the on top of your dresser. Put tank on plywood.

Hello; I put my first tank on a piece of wood furniture 50 some years ago. The furniture was badly damaged. Water will find a way out of a tank and even if in small amounts will migrate under the tank. The wood will likely become soaked and damaged.
I like the idea of plywood onder a tank and use plywood under most of my tanks.

Always support all edges and corner of your aquarium. Tank manufacturer will advise you to use a business card to check if there's gap between tank and stand
