Does anyone else have issues with this? :irked:

My arowana, who is about 19-20 inches long now, hates almost everyone. He elicits attacks from other fish because he won't leave them alone, I can't even keep him with anyone but my bullhead because it's the only fish he tolerates.
The most recent fish I've tried him with is a big foot or so long jack dempsey. They were ok for several days, the jack dempsey just sat at the bottom and ignored everyone, until my arowana did what he does and started attacking the JD (he actually travels to the bottom of the tank to start crap). After about a day running away from my arow the JD decided to fight back and even after getting pretty beat up by the JD the arow still kept harrassing and biting him, so now they're both torn up.
The JD is currently suspended near the top of the tank in a big pond net until I can get him back to the fish store and the arowana keeps attacking him through the net, so I guess I'll have to stick him in a large tub instead.

I'm just dumbfounded, because I'm sure he would fight to the death rather than just leave the other fish alone. He goes up to other fish (mainly cichlids), starts wiggling back and forth and opening his mouth, bashing into them until they respond. If the other fish flares their gills at him, as cichlids normally do, he'll flare his right back and then proceed to lip lock. I didn't even know this was within the scope of silver arowana behavior. Has anyone else seen this, or did he learn it from the cichlids or something? He's just a huge troublemaker for some reason.

Very much south..
No, that is not a normal aro behaviour. You got the crazy one. Might as well keep it and treat it as a cichlid and keep it in a separate tank ( perhaps wiht some bottom dwellers ). You'll enjoy her no matter what....

LOL, I didn't think it was normal. I guess I'll try catfish and maybe some bichirs and see how that works out. He never even touches my bullhead, so it seems like specifically cichlids and similar fish are what annoy him.

He's also not skittish like most silver arows are. If people walk past he immediately swims to the front and begs. You can wave your hand at him and it doesn't bother him, not to mention he'll bite you if you stick your arm in the tank.

He also tried to eat a large suction cup once :screwy: (attempted to swallow it as we were trying to take it out of his mouth). I think perhaps he's just mentally unstable.

its a silver aro with jar behavior ??
my silver has 10" but is totally peacefull, the only tankmates are two black plecos and a bp (that always chase the aro, but the silver don1t even care).
the best is let your silver in separate tank

aros are jus known to be calm n chill, but i am never surprised about agressive silvers. my neighbor down the street has a 30" silver who wont tolerate anyone but the tinfoil barbs and dempsy thats in with it. any other fish big or small gets beat to crap. he's jus one of those fish, that like more swimming space and would rather not share it

buy another silver lol, or 2, bet it calms down a bit

Mine wasn't aggressive at 10". When he hit about 18" is when he went psycho.

That or he'd beat the crap out of them. :grinno:

If I had more tank space I'd try him with some other silvers and just seperate them if he became aggressive, but we're in the process of finding a house and moving, so I don't wanna add more big tanks yet.
