what size tank have you personally kept your silver arowana in?

also, whats the differnce between jardini and silver (tried searching to no avail)

While there are probably quite a few threads on MFK about Arowana varieties, I just found it easier to post one of the links I had bookmarked back when I was researching Arowanas:

You should find all the information you need on the above webpage.

Regards,
Sid

PS: I housed my 5 inch Silver Arowana in a 30 gallon tank for a few months before moving him to a 180 gal tank. (I am considering adding a couple of Gars as tank-mates. Not yet sure if this combination works for both the Aro and the Gars.)

i have mine in my 100 gal

My 16"er is in a 220 (72x24x30).

There is a huge difference between jars and silvers:

-For one thing, their tails are shaped completely different; silvers have elongated tails, jars have shorter tails and a much larger caudal fin.

- Jars tend to be far more aggressive than silvers.

-Jars are from Australia, silvers are from SA.

-Silvers get to almost twice the sice of jars.

-Silvers are more slender.

-Silvers spend most of their time at the top of the water.

-Jars swim at all levels of the water.

-Jars are rarer and more expensive.

-The mouth of a silver points more upward, whereas a jar's mouth points more foreward.

-Jars tend to be less colorful.

i have mine in a 240 gallon, i wish my Jar is that bright ^^^

Jardinis, will adapt to the enviroment and change their color. My Jardini is a grey color, but my tank is basically blacked out.

I have 4 arowana each is listed with previous and current tanks below.

Silver aro, 28"+, five years old. I've owned it for 3 years. It was raised in a 90g for near 2 years and was 21" long. In my care it has been kept in a 180g and now in a 450g.

Silver aro, 28", 4.5 years old. Raised it from 2.5" baby. This guy has been in many tanks, 55g, 75g, 120g, 150g, 180g, now in a 450g.

Black aro, 24", 4 years old(estimated) I have owned for over 3 years. Has been in a 120g, 150g, and now in a 450g tank.

Black aro 14", got it last June at 2-2.5" it has been in a 55g, 75g, now in a 120g. Hoping to move it to the 450g in August(hopefully I'll be 18" by then).

I'd consider a 180 (6'x2'x2') to be the absolute minimum and that's assuming there are no obstructive decorations. Personally I'd go for something with a base of 8'x3' for long term care...

brian one of your aros was living in a 90g for two years(im assuming the previous owner kept him like this)

This was a 90g with a footprint of 48 x 18". When I adopted the aro it was deformed had a hunchback and looked like a clownknife fish. Took 4-5 months and it grew out of it's deformity.

wow, thanks for all the great response guys, i've really learned a lot!

i personally preferr the look and flow of the silver.
