Silver dollar male or female

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Round anal fins are makes. Females have a straight anal fin. Looks to have a mix of make and female but a bit difficult to tell in pics.

Correct me if I’m wrong but from my understanding the males also get a “breeding dress” which gives them black splotches. Mine tend to get their breeding dresses at night and 4 out if my 6 spotted silver dollars get them.

They do get some spotting.

I have some bigger SD, maybe this 4 pics will be more clear , but can they cross breed? Spotted and normal SD?

I call it 5 o'clock shadow, I have two males and 4 females I believe. The females are a bit bigger too

In the top pic the smaller SD near the Clown Loach looks like a male. Btw never heard of SD's cross breeding.

They are egg scatterers.....I had some lay eggs a few years back and found them in my filter....I am sure most became lunch for someone. I have breeding behavior in my spotted now but no eggs yet!

I have bred silver dollars before at home, school of 12 in a pool pond mid summer lots of plants to catch falling eggs and for fry to hide in. They usually are fine with the fry with the adults as they aren't big carnivores but is possible so for best results i recommend separating when they become free swimming at about 9 to 10 days. Water temps around low to mid 80's worked well for me.
Previous comments already answered to sexing so i wont go over that again. Good luck and if you really want to breed them i would remove tank mates like the clown loaches as they would quickly eat the eggs before hatching.
