Hi sorry to disturb.
Recently obtained a new bichir from a hobbyist. Didn’t notice it had bichir worms (macrogyrodactylus polypteri). Only noticed after the bichir started developing a large white patch on his head. At first thought it banged it head on the lid. Then it became more lethargic and so went in for a closer look and noticed the worms.
The past 3 days I have dosed the tank with Prazi, Worm-ex and salt, and that seems to have solved the issue of the worms as I don’t see them anymore.
However, the issue now is there is many red streaks and white patches on the bichir, which I’m assuming is the scarring left by the worms. The bichir is now going into slimecoat overdrive, and producing excessive amounts of it. It still goes up for air and everything, but it looks in really bad condition overall. I’m assuming it is producing the excessive slimecoat to try heal the wounds? Or it is really stressed out?
What medication should I use to treat the wounds? So far, I’ve used kanaplex as well as salt, with 80% water changes every 2 days. Any suggestions and tips would be helpful. Thanks everyone.
