Snakeheads in Virginia
Learn More:Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries biologists are tracking a population of non-native Northern Snakehead fish along a 50 mile section of the Potomac River and its tributaries, from Washington, D.C., to Aquia Creek. The snakehead is a predator fish native to Asia and considered an exotic species in Virginia. VDGIF fisheries biologist John Odenkirk discusses the potential impact the snakehead could have on native fish species as he conducts an electroshocking survey along with Game Department and USFW personnel. Electroshocking does not kill fish, but stuns them momentarily so they can be captured. On this day an unusually large number of Northern Snakeheads were found in Dogue Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River.
