I had posted last week about my pleco that I couldn't get to eat and about getting him driftwood. Well, he's MUCH better now, and color has come back. Someone had asked my what kind he was, and I thought all black plecos were the same so I said he was common.

However, I have a big fish book that I was looking at yesterday and noticed there's 2 algae eaters in there that are similar....the common and snow king. I took the book over and compared him to the pictures....my pleco is without a doubt a Snow King!!

Does it mean anything other than the size he'll get and the water parameters?

I noticed he LOVES eating frozen blood worms....strange

Post a good pic.

I will, but need some time....

I found this statement on an article online. How true is it? "The Snow King Pleco is very aggressive towards its own and similar looking species. "

The reason why I ask is because the pleco is about 9-10 inches and I have a foot long ashara catfish (who does NOT eat live fish. Actually, only handfed hotdogs). They are kept in a 125g together. They've paired up, and actually rest upon one another. We joke about them mating. They always follow each other around, but in a peaceful/playful manner

Achara catfish you mean. They should not be fed ANY mammal meat by the way. Feed the achara cats silversides, shrimp, tilapia any other fish filets and sinking hikari pellets.

What they mean by the snow kings being aggressive to other similar looking fish is other plecos.

I tried my best, but then he swam away from me... I wanted to get a good pic of the triangular pattern on his body, and the straight diagonal lines on his lower sides

also, you mentioned about the achara catfish ( I realized my typo afterward) not eating mammal meat. Is there a specific reason? We got him almost a year ago and at that time we couldn't get him to eat anything. Tablets, freeze dried krill, shrimp pellets would all just fall right in front of his mouth, but he wouldn't budge. Out of desperation my hubby gave him some hot dog as he was losing weight, and has been on it ever since....and getting big from it.... He did go after the frozen blood worms, but he'd have to eat many to get full.

The one fish book I refer a lot to...."An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aquarium Fish" by Gina Sandford ...just states that the achara catfish, or their common name reticulated pim perruno catfish can be condiitoned to accept dead meaty foods (beefheart, etc) and will not accept commercial fish food. I *assumed* hotdogs would be ok...

thanks for the responses....after doing a search on this forum, I'm not giving my kitty fish (achara) anymore hotdogs. I'll try and wean him on something else, not sure as that's what he's accustomed to.

btw, yes, I too am glad the pleco's "still kicking". I was worried there for a bit, but wouldn't give up. I should know better that I'm going to have feeding problems in the beginning when getting someone else's bigger fish.
