Hey guys

I'm 13 years old and plan on starting up a 6 foot marine tank when I move house now the main fish I want is a snowflake moray eel. I've been looking into the cate of these guys and heard their pretty hardy as long as you keep the filtration up and have a very good lid on the tank. Basically I'd like to know any other info and tips on keeping them as well as potential tank mates.having read that they mainly eat Crustaceans i'd like to know if there's any smallish fish like gobies, blennys, Dragonets or any other fish that will mix well
Thanks in advance

I have never kept one.

That being said:

I would steer clear of smaller tank mates.

A six foot tank will be great for your snowflake...look into smaller groupers, angels, butterflies, tangs...etc to fill out the tank.

Triggers might be bitey with a slow moving fish like a snowflake.

I have had one for the past two weeks (not very long, but I'm starting to pick up on its behavior), and it's been doing pretty well with my stock.

It's about 14" long or so and is in a 55 gallon aquarium (will be upgraded later) with a few other small fishes and invertebrates. With that being said, I agree with FLESHY on steering clear of smaller tankmates (especially ones that it could easily swallow); none of its tankmates will fit in its mouth, but that didn't stop it from taking a chunk out of a spotted cardinalfish's tail when I was late for feeding it by a few hours. Please also remember that their natural diet is invertebrates (crabs, shrimps, etc.), so it may kill and/or eat the invertebrates in your aquarium. In my case, it has yet to kill and/or eat any of the invertebrates in my aquarium, but my scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp has since changed its preferred perch to one that's on the opposite side of the aquarium from the eel's den, so I suspect that it may have been chased by the eel at some point. Be sure to provide plenty of hiding places for the eel to help it feel secure. My snowflake eel eats frozen pieces of krill and has already been trained to get food from a certain spot in the aquarium rather than wander all over in search of feeder; this training is probably also why the cardinalfish got attacked since it wandered into the designated feeding area. I feed the eel at least twice a day, sometimes more if the eel is begging for more food.

will eat small fish despite the fact that they are Echidna, as they grow some tend to get aggressive as well. Large fish that will not nibble on the eel are preferred tankmates IMO, staying away from triggers, puffers, aggressive wrasses, and large angels

i always thought snowflakes were passive the 2 i've had would scoot around and mind their own. but my fimbriated goes out lookin for trouble it seems lol.

I have a fimby as well as a moringa...the snowflakes are nothing close to their level, but during feeding they will nip ocassionaly. Very peaceful as far as morays go, with the exception of zebra IMO

Any predator will be opportunistic... if there's something that is small enough to swallow and it's not seeing it coming, that fish is going bye-bye.
As far as eels go, snowflakes are probably the 3-4th least likely to do that... The 7+ year old one we had at RFC had to be hand fed smelt and shrimp, it was so timid.

One word about tankmates, butterflies, angels, and tetradonts seem to have some insatiable desire to eat eel eyeballs... weird...

Mine does just fine with a yellow tang volitan lionfish niger trigger clown trigger picasso trigger v tail grouper dragon wrasse porcipine puffer and freshwater lionish so you don't have to be too careful they can deff hold their own..

Lol I think I started this hobby when I was 13...now 15 lol

Well my first inhabitant was a snow flake eel. Let me warn you, only purchase fish that are larger then its mouth and more...because I've watched my snowflake eel devour a 4 inch christmas wrasse when the eel was less than a foot! They do death rolls like crocs for larger meals. Also make sure ever hole is covered, my eel ended up in my old filter a few times....and then he jumped out a few months ago and died.

Snow Flake Eel Tank Mates IMO
-Lionfish
-Trigger Fish
-Large Damsels ( Huge Dominos)
- Large Tobys
- Large Big Bodied Gobies
- Puffer Fish
-Groupers
-Batfish
....Pretty much any BIG BODIED FISH....I caps that because you can have a long slender fish be easily swallowed by an eel.

Also another tip, Predetors can and normally do become prey if tankmates are to large....such as a Large Lionfish (Has a large mouth) can devour small eels.

Hope this helps a little...
