I am unsure if I need a sock. sump is 29 gal and tank 90. Could I use it part of the time as I hear it is helpful. I am not sure if I want to deal with cleaning more then once a week. I have sponges in my over flow also.

rio 2500 pump. USing bio balls and other filter media from existing tank

Any suggestions appreciated as I see so many different types of set ups.

i use a 200 micron sock on my 180 and have to change it once a week. id recommend sock prefilter. easy convenient and keeps the worst of the crud out of the sump

Using 2 4"x12" 100 micron socks in my 20 gal sump (for a 90gal tank also). It takes me about 5 min to change the socks out. I bought my socks from filterbags.com (http://filterbag.com/PONG100P4P-p845.html). I'm sold on filter socks now. <I had 8" socks when I took the pic - the 12" ones extend to the bottom of the sump>

Filter socks are great, I use 2x 100 micron socks on my 125 gallon sump for my 360 gallon tank. I rinse them once a week during my water change and completely replace them approximately every 6 months.

I would put a layer of foam where the water is going to fall throught since that my be easier to change but I see no where to put it in your sump

I've seen people just lay the sock on top where the water flows into the sump and change it once a week

Filter socks are the only sensible mechanical filter to use with a sump IMO.
