Hi guys,

I have always been living under the impression that stingrays and plecos cannot live together in the same tank due to the risk of plecos sucking off the stingray's slimecoat. I was going through the polypterus section and saw this thread whereby a guy said that it is safe to keep a bristlenose pleco with polypterus, it being one of the few that will not disturb its slime. I am wondering if this is true and does it mean that a bristlenose can be kept with rays?

here's the thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?533144-My-new-baby-monster

thanks in advance!

I don't see why one pleco would be different from another. It could just be the individual pleco. You could monitor it's activity and play it by ear.

thanks for the input guys! would love to have a pleco clearing up the slime around the tank walls and maybe the algae too but i cant afford to risk my rays haha

I stayed away from keeping them together for a good while then after watching an Asian breeder with 1-2 plecos in each tank I said why shouldn't I do the same and threw my common pleco in that same day. No issues at all but I have a huge tank with lots of room, I have a flower pot with opening in a corner that the pleco hangs out in a allot during the day but comes out when wants and at night

Bn pleco's were the first ones I tried with my rays, they tried to stay clear of the rays but after a week they were all eaten.
Then I tried a 5" gold nugget pleco and he worked good with the Leo's but not with the P-14's the gn pleco rode the female P-14 half way across the tank mutiple times but never hurt her.

I keep an l200 and a common black with my rays no problems, it's up to the individual fish, some aquire the taste for some coats and some don't, I've gotten rid of my bn pleco which I also thought would be the safest but was wrong. Keep an eye on whatever you go with and see what happens, you may get lucky and never have a problem. Just be prepared to remove a problem pleco if needed.
