Well, after planning a native tank for what seems like about a year I finally am doing one! This isn't going to be like that hypothetical 20 gallon I was going to do. I actually have the tank and stand that I got for free from a friend that's been out of the hobby for years. It's a 30 gallon long so the dimensions are 36" long by 12" wide by 16" tall. I'll have pictures of it below to prove I have it :). Now me being the avid fisherman and local scuba diver that I am, I'd like to do fish(es) that I catch and/or can observe while diving. Now being that this is only a 30 long it rules out the majority of sport fish but there are still some I could do.

That being said, I'd like to do a Sunfish of some species and don't really have any interest (as of now) in doing minnows, darters, sticklebacks, etc. which IMO can be very skittish. To be even more specific, I'd like to do a Sunfish indigenous to my local lake since this is going to be a biotope for it. There are several species of sunfish in the lake that I and the PA fish commission are aware of. Now obviously we can rule out Bluegills, Largemouth Bass, and Black Crappie as options since they all obviously get to big. After getting rid of them as possibilities there are 3 species left that I think would do good in a 30 long: Green Sunfish, Pumpkinseed, or White Crappie. White Crappie may even be pushing it but I've never heard of many getting over 8" long. Same goes with Pumpkinseeds. I have a feeling that a Green would be my best choice considering they only get 6-8" on average, I know they can get 10-12" in aquaria but tell me the last time you've seen one that big. So pretty much just give me your say on which of those 3 sunfish you think would do the best in that tank, Greens would be the easiest to obtain, then Pumpkinseeds, and White Crappies even though there are tons of them are something you never see people catching at my lake and I've never caught any myself.

So lets talk about the specifics of the tank

Volume: 30 Gallons
Dimensions: 36"L x 12"W x 16"H
Substrate: tan/grey loose pea gravel
Filtration: (probably) Penguin 200
Lighting: 6-8 hours plus ambient sunlight
Temperature: 66-78 F
pH: 7.6

So what do you guys think about the stock and specs?

Small stuff... Maybe assorted minnows? I have seen 10" creek chubs in some dudes tank so fo not get them :D

Yeah, I've caught 12" Creek Chubs from time to time so they definitely aren't an option. I want to stay away from pretty much all minnows and darters though, unless by some miracle somebody created a super-short-body carp

Pumpkinseeds may not even be large or dominant enough as a single specimen in a 30. I say go for green, though I don't know how the crappie behave.

Pumpkinseed do look fantastic though, I have a 6" male that is stunning.

You are aware right that you could probably only do one sunfish in a tank that size because of aggression, unless you get pygmy sunfish? Looks wise pumpkinseed are my favorite, but greens have the best personality IMO.

I seriously would encourage you to reconsider darters though!! That tank is perfect for them, and you could set it up as a riffle tank. IME, they settle into captivity very quickly, and once youve had them awhile darters get super tame! Mine eat from my fingers and follow me around the tank like little puppies. They are adorable, and easily one of my favorite fish! And did I mention quite beautiful? All the different species and indiviuals have different personalities too. Also mudminnows do well with them too, and they kind of look like minature muskies (sort of -same family).

Yeah, I know I can only do a single specimen. I feel the same as you, greens have better personality and pumpkinseeds have better looks. I'm going for personality though that's why I'll probably do a green. That's cool that your darters handfeed! I have a 37 tall in storage that's waiting to be setup in the fall so maybe I'll do a stream or riffle tank for that, another reason I'm doing a sunfish is my house has he potential to get over 82 in the summer for short periods (got 87 one night a few years ago!) and while sunfish can tolerate that for short periods I'm aware that minnows and darters like colder water which is why I'd do a tank for them after summer.

Group of spotfin/steel color shiners would look good. Easy to breed as well. Then have some misc darters on the bottom and few log perch.

It'd have to be a fish I can catch with either rod and reel or minnow trap and I don't think there are any spotfin or steel shiners in my local creek.

I've made the decision, going with a single green sunfish.

Does anybody know of a way to sex green sunfish at about 1.5-2"? Doesn't matter a lot and doesn't have to be completely reliable but just as a way to know, same with bluegills and pumpkinseeds.

Well I measured the stand and the tank. With the stand flat on the floor the top of the tank would only be 3 feet tall! I'm definitely not sitting down to look at the tank so going to find something else to hold it. Do you guys think a Credanza with two wide legs (left and right sides) that's 50" long could support a 30 full of water, or would the weight break it? I have my 30 tall on a craft cabinet and it's holding up.
