We are about to build a 750 gallon monster tank. It will be 10 feet long, 4 feet deep and 30 inches high as planned. Acrylic if we can swing it. Glass is too heavy and the risk of breakage spooks us.

I could use a bit of help with part of the stocking.

We already have most of the fish scattered in various tanks around the house. Those going in for certain are:

1 silver Arowana
4 Oscars
2 black ghost knife fish (yes, they actually do get along really well!)
1 marbled sailfin pleco
1 royal pleco

I think we'll also add our fire eel, Beaker. He's not South American but he should do very well in that tank.

Here are some possibilities (they won't all be chosen):

1 chocolate cichlid
1 to 5 severums as space and dynamics allow (we have 4 Heros sp. "Rotkeil red shoulder" and 1 H. severus, gold strain)
1 true parrot cichlid (Hoplarchus psittacus)
Electric blue Jack Dempsey
1 or 2 blood parrots
Large bichir, such as a P. endlicheri

The chocolate cichlid and at least 1 severum are probably good. I don't see how they wouldn't fit in. We would LOVE the true parrot cichlid but I am concerned that it might be too aggressive for the other species. I also don't want to overstock the tank. The EBJD is an alternative to the true parrot but it's CA. Mellower than the standard JD, but still... CA. We have a couple of dorky blood parrot hybrids that would love it in there if it's not too rough for them. One of them already lives and schools with the Oscars. She delights in eating the chunks that spew out of their mouths at meal time. We're leaning away from the bichir. It's cool but it doesn't really belong, we don't already have one and again we'd be pushing it with the stocking limit. I also don't know how well Beaker would like sharing his tank floor.

Suggestions?

Maybe you could get a big school of some kind of large barb or tetra in there.
I would love a school of red hook silver dollars but I don't know if they are big enough to avoid being eaten. I'd hate to have them turned into snacks. Tinfoil barbs were a contender but the bioload for a school of them made us rethink it. Maybe a school of pink tail chalceus?

Paired off severums can hate every other pair of severums and square off everyday even in a tank that large. Don't be surprised if you find split fins among the severum. Might I suggest a shoal of festivums instead?

Skip the EBJD unless you can get a non-deformed looking one 6+".

Green terrors tend to be pretty mellow, could be an alternative to the true parrot.

The chocolate or any new cichlids should be in the tank for the first couple weeks before the 4 oscars.

I was plotting a bachelor herd of severums for just that reason. We have a couple of females but they're staying behind with the smaller community cichlids if we add severums to the giant tank.

We had 4 festivums but lost 3 shortly after they arrived. I am not sure exactly what did them in, though the LFS guy stated that they are very sensitive. The remaining festivum would probably enjoy being turned loose with everyone else though.

Yeah, I have decided against the EBJD. It wasn't a strong contender.

Green terrors are gorgeous but might be a bit too aggressive for the most passive fish like the BGKs and fire eel. I think we're going to pass on the true parrot as well, though it pains me to say it. From the information I've been able to scrape up their temperaments seem to be highly variable with some being peaceful and some being very aggressive. An aggressive 14 inch cichlid can do a lot of damage. We can't risk it.

Good to know about adding the other cichlids well in advance of the Oscars!

We figured it out.... Gone are the true parrot, EBJD, 2 out of 5 severums so we don't get pair aggression and also the bichir.

The Monster Tank:

1 silver Arowana
4 Oscars
2 black ghost knife fish
1 marbled sailfin pleco
1 royal pleco
1 gold severum
2 Rotkeil severums
8 silver dollars
1 honorary "South American" fire eel. Say, "Hola!" Beaker. ;)
