Hi everyone I have finally finished building my new tanks and it's time to make a decision on substrate. I currently have white gravel for marble rays, but was wondering about sand as I have never used sand before. The tanks themselves are black fibre glass and I don't intend to cover everything just enough for them to play with. Do you think white sand, black sand or gravel would be best? please give me all your ideas and what you use yourself. Just as a note because of the way rays eat do they not get a mouth full of sand when eating (same with other bottom eating fish for that matter)? That's why I went with heavier gravel originally.

Substrate ingestion isn't a problem. I've done a few tank bottom methods and find the Carib sea torpedo beach is the best out there specifically for rays. Their peace river is also a good choice. Reason being is they're an in between size not sand but close to... not your typical gravel either..lol so not sand and not gravel..

I have pool filter sand in my right now but am thinking about going bare bottom to help keep the water parameters more consistent. My rays love the sand though.

I use PFS as well and mix in some larger grain caribsea peace river for texture and color. I don't have any problems.
