Hello people!

haven't been on here for a while, just got myself a Channa Pulchra hes currently in a grow out tank as I have another larger one to put him in when he puts on more size,

what does everyone generally use for substrate baring in mind I will have live plants in the tank.

thanks!

Here’s his current set up, not a fan of the substrate as it’s super light

She looks good!
As for substrate, it's not really relevant if you add more vallisneria gigantea.
As it'll cover the surface it'll darken to the point where your channa will feel safe enough to display full colors.

Works with other plants, I just personally like vals :)

What do you mean it’s not relevant mate? Ivehave just added a lot more Amazon frogbit aswell which helps cover the surface a lot.

What about barrage do you you usually??

What substrate do you use usually*

Channa aren't too bothered about the substrate, more the cover on top and planted areas to sit in, is what he's saying. Its more about personal choice, i would say. I use a 2/3mm gravel, i love the look of sand, but the snakeheads I've kept tend to dig and muck it all up and clog the filter.

Yeah this is the problem I have with my Pulchra he’s digging up the substrate I have currently and it’s very light which doesn’t help, will sand clog filters up if disturbed then?

Maybe when I have more surface cover he won’t dig as much??

I used to keep dwarf snakeheads with sand with no problemz, they didn't clog my filters up. My Pulchra used to clog the filter up with all their shenanigans. Any snakehead over pulchra size, i wouldn't use sand.
I don't like large particle substrate, so a heavier rock sand/ fine gravel is the happy medium i settled for.
Pulchra were the most active and mischevious I've kept so far.

Which brand do you use? How does it fair with live plants?

I used unipac fiji coarse sand. Took about 50kg to fill my 6ft tank. I only ever keep live plants in pots, i mostly use silk plants that my auranti can't dig up/destroy.
