am just thinkin can i get a gar that dusnt get as big as they do normally.. can any1 inform me? pic will help me aswell lol

PERFECTLY SAID zfishies... i gt a 4.5'x18"x22" will a gar be okay in it... this is why i wonder if there are any small gars or dwarf gars

That size tank would last you a while with a gar, but would not be ok for the full life of a gar. You'd maybe get 12 months out of that tank, depending on species of gar.

Check the stickies for growth sizes for the different species of gar. As far as I know, there are no species of dwarf gar, and anyone trying to sell one as such either has stunted (unhealthy) animals or is lying about how big they'll get.

Boulengerella maculata or Mosaic gar. Also known as spotted pike characin.
Not a true gar, but very similair. They are often mislabeled as gars.
Needle gar are probably the smallest, but they still get a little under 2ft.

A stunted gar will obviously die from poor health. Heres a shot of a Boulengerella maculata

My first fish was a needle fish from petsmart. from what Ive seen they dont get very big, not much bigger then 1'. They resemble gars in many ways but dont have really any colors or patterns on them. Wish i still had mine but my RTC i use to have ate them.

The easiest gar to keep in captivity would be Florida gars. They are also the most available gar, and one of the smallest growing. They will generally reach 24-30" maximum in home aquaria, although that can vary depending on care and environment.

They can live in something like a 125g tank (72"x18"x21") for the first 1-1.5 years, then would need to be moved up to something with a larger footprint, like a 180g or 220g tank. Either of those would probably last a Florida gar for life.
