Sump return?

I setup my sump yesterday, I made PVC overflows like in the sticky which work great (thanks MFK). But I just switched off the pump to do a WC and the water siphoned through the return back into the sump and overflowed spilling water everywhere. I was using in return off of my Fluval FX5 with the dual jets. How do you guys make it so the water doesn't siphon out? I have now cut it off at the waters surface but would like to go back to using the whole hose.

Drill a hole in the return just below the water line. 1/4" should do the trick. This will break the siphon when the power goes out, but will just shoot water under the surface when it's running.

Isn’t the siphonic overflow popularly distributed through MFK one employing a surface skimmer on the tank side which would prevent back siphoning ?

Do you have a link to the design of the one you used ?

Drill two holes 180 degree apart and like nolapete said. This will prevent problems with floating debri clogging the single hole. Safety in numbers.

Its a sticky in this section, its not the overflow I have a problem with (although they are loud) but the return.
