ok, so I have had mild Ich doing a slow burn in my 180 hap tank for several months. I have tried the heat/salt treatment for two weeks, tried various medications for a couple weeks each....it just will not go away. not all my fish are afffected, and those that are just have a handful of spots at any given time.

Last weekend I had a mysterious death in the tank, my first death in that tank in 5 years. I suspect gill damage due to Ich as the likely cause. Therefore, I have to take definitive action and cure this thing once and for all.

So, my thoughts turn to CLOUT. I'm scared of it for sure...powerful stuff. Should I give it a try?
If so, will my bushynose pleco be ok with it? The rest of the tank is occupied by adult haps, which are my pride and joy....am I taking a big risk? Any modified dosing recommendations to be safer?

opinions welcome. handholding and pep talks encouraged ;)

Haven't used it in years. Salt/heat has been working for me. However, here's some google'd info on CLout:

Clout (10 Tablets)
Manufacturer: Aquarium Products
Aquarium Products' Clout is an effective medication for the treatment of parasitic and the protozoan infestations of freshwater and saltwater aquarium fish. Clout treats Ich, hydra, flukes, leeches, Planaria, Hexamita, and anchor worm. Contains Dylox (Trichlorphon). Do not use with invertebrates!

Parasite infestation is one of the most persistent problems aquarium owners face (especially tanks with large communities). Parasites become present when mature parasites, which have been feeding on host tissues, fall away to the bottom of the aquarium. Once on the aquarium floor, they become enclosed in a membrane and divide many times hundreds of times over. Hundreds of infective swarmers become a part of your aquarium's culture searching for a fish host. Clout was developed as a wide ranging medication, but will not damage plants or algaes.

Treatment for parasitic disease including:
Ick
Argulus
Leeches
Diogenetic Flukes
Body Fungus
Lernia (Anchor Worm)
Parasitic Copepods
Monogenetic Flukes
Planaria
Hexamita
Epistylis
Hydra
Trichodina

Dosing Instructions:
1. Remove & discard any carbon from your filter, but DO NOT discontinue filtration.

2. Fill half a disposable cup with aquarium water. Dissolve one (1) tablet for every ten (10) gallons (38 liters).

3. Add dissolved tablets to aquarium.

4. If parasites are still present after 24 hours after initial treatment, change 1/3 of the water and repeat treatment.

5. Change 25% of the water 24 hours after final treatment. Replace new carbon at this time.

One treatment is typically adequate; however, up to six (6) doses can be used, for severe cases.

DO NOT USE WITH:
Piranahas
Metynnis Species
Scaleless Fish
Bottom Feeders
Marine Sharks
Lion Fish
Invertebrates

NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN MARINE AQUARIUMS WITH LIVE ROCK

Contains a dye that may stain silicon sealant and decor.

Do Not Exceed Recommended Dosage.

Keep out of Reach of Children

Do not use on fish intended for human consumption

For aquarium use only.

One (1) Follow-up treatment may be administered one week after last dosage. Only ONE treatment is necessary.

Because Clout can affect nitrification, we recommend treating with Clout in a separate aquarium or isolated environment.

Check your water quality before and after treatment.

Upon any sign of stress, perform a 75% water change.

If you experience any deterioration of your biological filter after treatment, use Biozyme to restore the biological system.

I am alwyas afraid of adding chemicals to my tanks. HOWEVER,desparate times call for desparate measures. You have to determine wether or not your situation is dire enough to use nuclear weapons. That being said bset of luck on whatever you decide.

heat/salt treatment for me was raise the temp to 85F and over a three day period raise the salt level to 3tsp/gallon, then keep it like that for two weeks.
it certainly helped, but in the end I could not get the last few spots of ich to leave the one fish who seemed to have it the worst.

and as for clout - sounds like the pleco will need to be removed before treatment....hmmm.

I guess Puffers are out.

clout is not a good choice for ich. heat/salt or formalin/meth
